Restoration of Trust, Collective Action, and Unfair Attacks
Rummy recalls a speech made by Stevenson in 1954 decrying the effects of McCarthyism. Without trust, government is stuck like a ship on a sandbar: unable to move. Without compromise with others and subsuming one's interests for the common good, no individual can achieve anything in life. If a good man is attacked unfairly and no one rushes to his defense, then good men will avoid public office.
None of this applies to the Rumsfeld of today.
